Maternity Care Coding Changes

Nicoletti Notes May 2026
Published on May 12th, 2026

HEALTHCON in Dallas was filled with great presentations and enthusiastic coders, billers, and compliance professionals. One of the sessions I was most grateful to attend was the AMA’s session on maternity care coding, presented by Leslie Prellwitz, MBA, CCS, CCS-P, CPMA. Her title at the AMA is Director, CPT® Content Management & Development. She was so clear and concise about the new codes. The presentation was in the last slot of the conference, was in a full room, and was well worth staying for.

You can hear directly from the AMA, too! Sign up for their webinar on June 2, 2026, here. Page down to the resources section, and there is a helpful summary as well as the link to sign up. Reporting maternity care services will have four components beginning 1-1-2027: Antepartum Care, Labor Management, Delivery, and Postpartum Care. There are only four delivery codes—what a simplification.

There are new codes, deleted codes, and revised codes. The AMA has advice about how practices are going to report services for patients who are pregnant now.  This is a must-watch webinar for OBGYN practices, Family Medicine groups that do OB, and Certified Nurse Midwives. And, for coders who want to stay up-to-date.

Thanks to everyone who came and said hello at HEALTHCON.
